For this week’s Staff Spotlight, we have Ms. Laboy. Ms. Laboy is a first-year intervention specialist in the Brooklyn City School District. She attended Notre Dame College for a degree in Education. A fun fact about her is that she has never broken a bone.

Q. What was your main motivation to become an intervention specialist?

A. “My motivation for becoming an intervention specialist comes from a lifelong passion for working with children. I had a genuine love for learning during my youth and because school was a place where I felt supported and inspired. I want to create that same safe environment for my students.”

Q. What is something people misunderstand about your job?

A. “We work long past dismissal time and sometimes over the weekend.”

Q. What is your favorite part about your job? What’s the most challenging?

A. “My favorite part about my job is seeing my students and doing different activities with them. The most challenging part about my job is staying on top of my day-to-day tasks.”

Q. Did you always know you wanted to work with kids? What is your favorite part about working with them?

A. “Since I was a teenager, I always wanted to work with kids. Growing up, I was always taking care of kids in my neighborhood and all of my younger cousins. I even started a Summer school at my house but that only lasted a week.”

Q. What kind of music or movies do you turn to when you want to relax?

A. “Listening to classical music and watching action movies helps me relax after a long day. Not at the same time, of course!”

Q. What is your favorite color?

A. “Purple, not sure why. It just always has been.”

Q. What is your go-to meal after a long day of work?

A. “A nice ground turkey tostada.”

Q. What is one piece of advice you have been given that you will never forget?

A. “You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

Thank you for your responses, Ms. Laboy. We wish you all the best in your first full-year as an intervention specialist here in the Brooklyn City School District.
