The Beginning of The End

The end of the first quarter is finally here. Well, in two days it is. This means that there are only three more quarters until graduation for all of the seniors; therefore, love it while it lasts.

Now, onto this week’s news.

Cleveland State University just announced some exciting news. They are granting free tuition for select Ohio students who have a 3.0 gpa or higher and live in a household that makes less than $125,000 annually. To be eligible, the FAFSA must be filled out along with the application. Any BHS seniors who meet the requirements and are planning to stay local should definitely apply.

Every year, new students make their way into our schools, and every year, we participate in “Hello Week” to make that transfer a little less awkward. Key Club has a spirit week set up for our students and faculty to participate in to foster friendliness this year. This week, say “Hello” to someone you’ve never met because it could make their whole week, maybe even their whole year.

Finally, the recent news of our dear Dr. Caleris’ departure has left some people sad. So, we wanted to use our journalism platform to provide more information from a recent interview with him.

We asked Dr. Caleris what he loves the most about Brooklyn.

“My favorite part of Brooklyn has always been the people. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with wonderful students, dedicated staff, supportive families, and a community that truly cares about its schools. I’ve been fortunate to be part of Brooklyn for a total of 19 years across two different tenures, and the relationships and memories I’ve made along the way will always be special to me. Being part of the Hurricane community is something I will always cherish. I am Forever a Hurricane!”

We also asked him what inspired his transition from the Brooklyn City Schools Superintendent to the soon-to-be North Olmsted City Schools Treasurer.

“This was a very personal and professional decision. An opportunity came along that I felt was the right next step for me in my career. After careful consideration, I decided it was the right time to pursue a new challenge. That said, this decision wasn’t about wanting to leave Brooklyn behind. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished here, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to serve this district.”

Going forward, we asked Dr. Caleris who will take over his post.

“That decision will be made by the Brooklyn City Schools Board of Education. The Board will determine the next steps in the leadership transition and communicate that information to the community. Brooklyn has a strong team of people who care deeply about our students, and I am confident that commitment will continue.”

Again, we want to thank Dr. Caleris for his countless hours of hard work, energy, and vision for our school district. We plan on enjoying these final two months with him as our leader.
