About - Cleveland Vegan

http://www.clevelandvegan.com/

Cleveland Vegan is a … you guessed it, a vegan restaurant located at 17112 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, Ohio. Founded by Laura Ross and Justin Gorski, Cleveland Vegan gives its take on organic, comfort food and, of course, delicious baked goods.

Now, during this time of a global pandemic, things are quite difficult for local businesses and restaurants, but they have found a way to make the best of this situation.

Since their dine-in area is closed, takeout and delivery are available, along with a meal service that provides a weekly giveaway to financially-struggling customers or frontline, healthcare workers.

Cleveland Vegan has a wide variety on their menu, ranging from their bakery to their cafe. They also offer a catering option as well!

They serve various types of beverages including smoothies, milkshakes, coffee, tea, superfood lattes, and more. Some of their smoothie options include creamy strawberry and banana, the greens of paradise, chocolate charge up, and orange dreamsicle (12oz./$7, 16oz./$8.50). These smoothies will be perfect for our hot, Ohio weather!

Not only does Cleveland Vegan serve a variety of drinks, they offer many food options as well. For just $14, a breakfast burrito includes southwest tofu crumble, kale, hash browns, cashew cheese sauce, and vegan sour cream.

They also include starters and small plate options on their menu as well. Some of their  small plate options include buffalo macaroni and cheese ($7), southwest tofu scramble ($6), and a simple salad ($5).

Their bakery offers plenty of items including cookies, donuts, pastries, muffins, scones, pies, and chocolates. They also make cakes and cupcakes which offer multiple flavors including churro, almond joy, chocolate turtle, strawberry casada, along with others.

Cleveland Vegan also grows all of its ingredients locally, making sure that the food they are serving is all organic. They believe that they can do their part to reduce harm to the planet and animals, while also making tasty meals for everyone to enjoy.

When restaurants begin to open again, Cleveland Vegan should be the first place you go to enjoy a wonderful atmosphere with amazing food and a kind-hearted staff.

Throughout this time of quarantine, we are sure that many people have missed going OUT to eat (We sure have!). So, as soon as quarantine is lifted, our first pick of restaurants is going to be Olive Garden, and we recommend it to be your first pick, too!

Olive Garden is located in Parma, Ohio. It offers a wide variety of food options on its Italian menu. Some highlights from the menu are fettuccini alfredo, salad with their famous Italian dressing, warm and buttery breadsticks, chicken parmesan, and much more.

While the food here may be a little pricey, it is definitely worth it. Appetizers range from $3.49 – $10.49. Soups and salads range from $5.79 – $9.99. Pasta dishes range from $9.99 – $17.99. Their Seafood ranges from $15.79 – $19.79. All of the meat dishes range from $14.79 – $19.29. The family size to-go bundle is $60.00. Kid’s meals are all $5.99. And last but not least, desserts all range from $1.79 – $7.29.

There are many restaurants to dine at after quarantine, so why should you come to Olive Garden? Well, the restaurant not only offers a wide variety of food choices but all at reasonable prices! They also have great service, although you may have to wait for a little bit to get in seeing as the restaurant is very trendy and popular. Once you are seated, however, the food is quick to arrive and delicious to eat.

Quarantine has forced a lot of people to eat fast food, so once quarantine lifts, restaurants will be packed, so make your Olive Garden experience a priority!

First Dine-In After Quarantine: Steve’s Diner

By: Normeze Rivera and Delaney David

May 15, 2020

With quarantine coming to an end and places starting to open up, everyone will be dying to get out of their homes for a nice meal.

Steve’s Diner is located in Brooklyn in the Biddulph Plaza. It serves American food and is best known for its hot dogs, like “The Works.” Not only does it serve hot dogs, they also have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

http://stevesdinercle.com/

Because Steve’s is a small, family restaurant, there are no menu highlights, but there are everyday specials. The prices are very affordable, such as $1-2 for a hot dog. A Crazy 8, which is two hotcakes, two eggs, two sausages, and two slices of bacon is just $5. All beverages are $1.

Steve’s is the perfect place to eat because of how cheap the food is. Everything is very affordable and still tastes great! The workers are also very kind and do their job well. If you need something, they are there for you right away.

Again, Steve’s is close. The address is 6850 Biddulph Avenue (44144). It takes five minutes or less to get there if you live in Brooklyn. Plus, it is open 24 hours, so if you are feeling hungry at any time of the day, just head on in.

Because Steve’s is a small, family diner, it is expected that it may be packed, but it usually is not. There is always a place open to sit with no wait at all. You walk in and seat yourself. Within minutes, a waiter/waitress will come to your table. They also do takeout, and all you have to do is call.

If you want a delicious, close to home, and very affordable place to eat, go to Steve’s Diner!

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mrs. Holko

By: Jonathan Drake

May 11, 2020

Mrs. Holko is the senior AVID teacher and a high school Spanish teacher. She has been a teacher for 17 years, all of them at BHS.  She received her education degree from Baldwin Wallace University and has been in education ever since. Outside of teaching, she has taken many students to Europe throughout her tenure and has built some lasting memories. She has a son, Jackson, and a loving husband as well as an extended family that includes all present and former senior AVID students.

Senora Holko is the most influential and motivational person that I have had the pleasure of meeting. Through the many commencement ceremonies and classes I have sat through with her, there is not one moment I would want to forget about.  She is a tireless worker and values teaching her students not just about the content but about life as well.

To Mrs. Holko, although we have not known each other for very long, it is easy to say that you have changed the lives of many. For years, you have led your students towards a path for a better future, whether that is furthering their education or going into the work force. Thank you for the best senior year anyone could ask for.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Verba

By: Destiny Cannon

May 10, 2020

Under the circumstances that we are in, it is easy to lose track of the people who are the most important and helpful to us. It is always nice to recognize teachers as most of their hard work goes unseen by many.

Today, I celebrate Mr. Jim Verba. Mr. Verba teaches physical science at Brooklyn High School and is currently serving as the Brooklyn City Schools Athletic Director. In previous years, he served as the head girls’ varsity basketball coach. Outside of work, he is the father of two beautiful daughters and a husband to his lovely wife.

I chose to recognize Mr. Verba because a lot of his work is actually not seen. The job of an Athletic Director is not easy. You have to organize, supervise, and monitor multiple sports teams at once and make sure that all the needs of each team is being met. Doing this job takes true dedication and that is something that Mr. Verba has. He is a man of his word and performs his tasks efficiently. He is the epitome of Brooklyn Pride.

Thank you, Mr. Verba, for being an amazing coach and mentor to me and many others. You never fail to make me laugh, and sometimes, that’s all I need!

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mrs. Lowe-Fleischer

By: Haley Schaldach

May 10, 2020

Mrs. Lowe-Fleischer is an AVID, Physical Education, and Health teacher at Brooklyn High School. She has been working at BHS for eleven years now and worked previously at BMS for seven years.

I chose Mrs. Lowe-Fleischer because she was my AVID teacher for two years (AVID 10 and 11), and she has pushed me to come out of my shy bubble and to be more involved in activities. She is such a positive and motivating teacher who always wanted the best for her students. There have been many times when she would check-in and to see how our AVID family was doing. She allowed us to grow and treated us like her own family.  Simply, she is just an amazing teacher and an even-better person.

I would like to say thank you, Mrs. Lowe-Fleischer, for everything that you have done for me. You pushed me to be the person I am today. Thank you for taking the time to help me come out of my shell and really enjoy my years in high school. You have really helped me through the years, and I do not know where I would be today if I was not fortunate enough to have you as an AVID mom for two amazing years.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Roegiers

By: Gino Pallotta

May 8, 2020

Mr. Roegiers has taught for a total of 17 years, 14 of which were in Brooklyn. He used to coach the boys’ varsity soccer team, and he is the current teacher for 11th grade AVID.  He also teaches chemistry and forensics to students from an array of grade levels in the high school building. To be able to teach, he received his graduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and went through training at the AVID institute for multiple years.

Choosing Mr. Roegiers was a simple choice for me. His chemistry class was the reason I decided to pivot into pursuing a career in chemistry. The way he conducted the class taught me to not be stressed even if the subject matter was hard, as long as I did the work I needed to understand the topic. It was obvious he cared about everyone in the class and how they did. The class was extremely hard, but knowing Mr. Roegiers, he helped along the way, which alleviated most of the stress.

Roegiers, thank you for all you have done. If you did not give the help I needed during your class, I may have never fallen in love with chemistry. Plus, you made sure your classes were going to be remembered. Even though I did not have one of your classes during my senior year, your classes will be integral to my high school memories and beyond.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Karl

By: Savannah David

May 8, 2020

Mr. Karl teaches sixth grade math, but previously, he taught sixth grade science at Brooklyn Intermediate School. Also, this is his sixth year of teaching and has been coaching the Brooklyn boys varsity basketball team for three years. Not only that, Karl also used to race for six years and earned five straight championships in five straight years. In his life now, he got engaged in 2019, has a two-month-old child, named Lydia, and has three step-daughters.

I chose Mr. Karl because when I had him as a teacher, he would make coming to school fun. He would use dojo bucks to have the students win prizes. Not only is Karl a great teacher, he is an excellent step-dad, too. As a father figure, he gives up so much of his time for me and puts me before himself. I value his opinion, both with school and everyday life.

Thank you for being a great science teacher, making school fun for students, wanting to see me succeed, and for being someone I can look up to and count on. I am extremely lucky and blessed to call you Dad!

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Abramovic

By: Daylun Armstrong

May 8, 2020

A teacher with such an amazing sense of humor, love, and joy that fills every room he is in, Mr. Abramovic (a proud Kent State University graduate) has been teaching at Brooklyn High School for 16 years in the math and science department. Not only is he an amazing teacher, he also has an amazing cultural background; he and his sisters are first generation Americans (parents immigrated to America from Croatia in 1970).

Mr. Abramovic remembers, “My parents always wanted us to have the opportunities that they did not have,” and that he did, being the first person in his family to attend college.

Why did I choose Mr. Abramovic, some may ask? Well, if being in a Croatian folk singing and dancing group for 11 years, loving animals (he has two cats – Malibu and Kitty, a betta fish, and of course his class pets, hermit crabs), while also loving to travel and exploring all of what the world has to offer, then I will give you more personal reasons.

Ever since the first day of walking into his classroom (a few years ago), Mr. Abramovic has always made me feel comfortable; he has always been there for me if I had a problem or even if I just wanted to talk. I will never forget the many times that I was having a terrible day, and just by being his authentic self, he would automatically cheer me up. Even the times when I was stressing out about school or maybe even life, he would always be there to comfort me and offer some of the best advice, and for that I am truly grateful that I know him.

Mr. Abramovic does not just make you feel like a student, he makes you feel like a friend. So “Abram,” if you are reading this, I just want to say thank you for everything that you do. You will never know how much I truly appreciate you!

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Kelber

By: Alaysia Curry

May 8, 2020

Mr. Kelber is a teacher at Brooklyn High School and has taught every level of high school ELA, including one semester of eighth-grade ELA, courses in mass media, media production, literature and film, humanities, speech, and College-Credit-Plus. Kelber also used to run the school’s media program when BHS had a student-run TV studio and produced student programs for the Brooklyn TV channel.  Additionally, he has been teaching at Brooklyn since 1997. Outside of teaching, he was the yearbook advisor for 10 years, coached boys varsity soccer for five years, advised the talent show for six years, and was the English Department Chairperson for 15 years.  Lastly, he worked very hard to earn his master’s degree in Mass Communication Theory and Methodology and his bachelor’s degree in English.

I chose to appreciate Mr. Kelber because he is a really nice person, and throughout the entire year that I have taken his English II class, I have learned so much from him. Kelber has always given his entire class so much respect even when they have misbehaved or even disrespected him. I love getting to read aloud and having chances to earn points. Every time a class walks into his room, you can see the amount of excitement he has on his face, even if you can tell he has had a rough day.

Thank you, Mr. Kelber, for being such a great teacher. I appreciate that you are always very respectful to your students and always making work fun and challenging. I am very happy to have gotten a teacher as great as you. I enjoy working with you, and hopefully, I will get to see you next year.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Mrs. Spuzzillo

By: Morgan Blechschmid

May 8, 2020

Mrs. Spuzzillo started teaching at Brooklyn in 1998; beforehand, she did her student-teaching with former teacher Mrs. Shymske in the fall of 1997. Mrs. Spuzzillo has co-taught every grade except for the 11th grade and has also had her own resource social studies, language arts, and science classes in middle school. She also used to have her own resource algebra 1 class at the high school a few years ago. This year, she co-taught two 8th grade social studies classes, one 9th grade world history class, and two English IV classes. Some of Mrs. Spuzzillo’s hobbies include watching her kids play softball/baseball and hockey. Her oldest daughter and her son play hockey; her son is a goalie, and her daughter plays forward. Another hobby of Mrs. Spuzzillo’s is exercising. She has recently started running and is proud to say she has run 125 miles in April! If you know Mrs. Spuzzillo well, you would know she loves her ice cream! Eating ice cream is her biggest hobby; for the past two summers, she has been going on a Summer Ice Cream Tour in which she visits a new ice cream shop every week!

I chose to recognize Mrs. Spuzzillo because she was a former 8th grade teacher of mine, and she has taught me a lot. I have always been one to struggle with math, which has always been my weakest subject and the subject I needed the most help with. I would always get so embarrassed and frustrated because I would not understand what we were learning in class. I was always too afraid to speak up to ask questions. During my 8th grade year, all of that changed.  If I did not understand something that we were learning, Mrs. Spuzzillo always made it known that we were always allowed to come to her office and ask her questions. I soon became more confident in what I was doing; I learned to speak up and ask questions during class, and soon enough, I breezed through math. Having a teacher who is understanding is the best feeling; always having that reassurance that you have someone who can help you is the greatest. As a freshman, to this day, I still ask Mrs. Spuzzillo for help with math!

Thank you so much for everything you do, Mrs. Spuzzillo! You deserve so much recognition! I really appreciate all that you have done to help me and so many others throughout the years, and I know I can count on you whenever I need extra help in the future.
