The Golden Goal

Last year, the 4 Nations Face-Off saw very high ratings, mainly the games between The United States and Canada. The Americans won the pool matchup against Canada, but in the championship bout, the Canadians came through victorious.

The United States was looking for its revenge in this year’s Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. How did both teams get to the Gold Medal game, though?

For the Americans, they went 3-0 in the preliminaries in addition to beating Sweden in the quarterfinals and Slovakia in the semifinals.

For Canada, they also went 3-0 in the preliminaries followed by a quarterfinals victory over Czechia and Finland in the semifinals.

The stage was now set for an epic battle to ensue.

Early on, the U.S. proceeded to strike first off of a breakaway goal from Minnesota Wild forward Matt Boldy to give the Americans an early 1-0 lead. Their defense was on point, too, shutting out the Canadians in the first period.

In the second period, the Canadians tied it up thanks to a goal from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, and just like that, it was a brand new game. As the period ended, the intense battle was deadlocked at 1-1.

The third and final period saw spectacular saves from Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck to keep Canada off of the board. However, the U.S. could not get their offense going, and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime, the Americans had a breakaway opportunity, and New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes (Michigan Wolverines alum) scored the golden goal to give the Americans the Olympic victory. The goal was assisted by hometown Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski.

For the first time since 1980, to the day, The United States won the gold medal in men’s hockey, “The Miracle on Ice, Part II”. After the game, the American team honored the late Johnny Gaudreau, who was tragically killed in 2024. He most definitely would have been a member of this team.

Great job, Team USA!

Another congratulations is necessary for the women’s hockey team as they also won the gold medal, also defeating Team Canada.

A great hockey sweep of our neighbors to the North!

To conclude, in Brooklyn’s Winter sports, the Sports Department would like to wish senior Adam Cowper good luck tomorrow as he heads down to Columbus for a chance to become the bowling state champion.

Also, the boys basketball team will host their first-round playoff game this Saturday against St. Martin de Porres. All students must purchase a ticket for $5. Tip off is at 1:00. Be there and be loud!

Below is the upcoming schedule for Brooklyn Hurricanes Athletics:
