Baseball is a game of failure at all levels, and a few mistakes can prove costly. This is what happened to the varsity baseball team two days ago as they hosted the Fairview Warriors.
Fairview took the first game of the season series with a 13-2 win on Monday, but the Hurricanes were determined to earn a game two victory to split the season series. The Warriors came in with a record of 7-8, while the Hurricanes stood at 3-8.
Right out the gate, the visitors put up three runs off of an RBI single in addition to a defensive miscue. However, the Hurricanes immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning when senior Jackson Diller led off with a single, followed by walks to senior Tyler Morgan and junior Aiden Starr. Then, senior Miguel Veloz got the Canes on the board with an RBI groundout, before junior Jadyn DeLuca hit a two-run single to tie the game, 3-3.
In the second inning, Starr retired the side in order, and the Hurricanes had a runner in scoring position in the bottom half, but they could not convert.
In the third, the Warriors regained the lead on an RBI groundout and scored again off of heads-up baserunning. Down 5-3, the Hurricanes went down in order to conclude the inning.
The Warriors kept the runs coming in the fourth inning after an infield single, a stolen base, and two wild pitches to make it a 6-3 ballgame. They kept their rally going with a two-run single to extend their lead to 8-3. This would mark the end of Starr’s day on the mound as he finished pitching 3.2 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits, walking four, and striking out four.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Hurricanes were looking to get something going after senior Steven Bartczak and sophomore Zander Rolon were hit by pitches with only one out and the top of the order coming up. However, Diller hit a sharp lineout to center, and Morgan struck out.
Junior Phillip Banaszak, who finished the fourth inning in relief of Starr, was on for the fifth inning. Fairview added two more insurance runs off of an RBI single and wild pitch, which made it a 10-3 ballgame. The Hurricanes responded back in the bottom half, as DeLuca drove in two more runs with a single. This base-knock gave him 4 RBIs on the day.
Veloz took the mound in the sixth, giving up zero earned runs, but the Warriors put more runs on the scoreboard off of a couple of errors and walks. The Canes did not plate a runner in the bottom frame.
In the final inning, Rolon pitched a clean seventh, giving up one unearned run and striking out one.
The Hurricanes went down in the bottom of the seventh, and the game was officially over with Fairview earning another division win and the season-sweep of Brooklyn.
Final Score: Fairview 14, Brooklyn 5
Even with the loss aided by walks and errors, there were some solid performances. DeLuca went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a stolen base. Diller also went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.
The boys will be back in action tonight as they travel to Clearview for a 5:00 start.
Also, the softball team will be at home tonight as they face Bard Early College with first pitch at 5:00.
Go Canes!
