Chosen for this week’s Staff Spotlight is Ms. Lisa Deliz. This is currently Ms. Deliz’s second year in the Brooklyn City School District. Previous to coming here, she worked numerous jobs in education as a teacher and as an assistant principal. When she is not working, she can be found reading, exercising, spending time with her family and friends, kayaking, or walking her dogs. A fun fact about her is that she once owned a tutoring company.
Q: What challenges do you face as the Director of Teaching and Learning?
A: “There is a lot of law coming down in schools, so I am coordinating to make sure we are compliant and following the law but also what is best for our students in Brooklyn and supporting the teachers and principals.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: “I like the challenges of being in my position. I have a lot of parts of the district that when I was a teacher, I did not understand what happened up here.”
Q: How does your personality affect your job?
A: “I think I am a good listener, even if we do not agree. I am willing to listen and hear, and I am open-minded. I am willing to listen to other viewpoints before making decisions. I know every decision has a domino effect, so if you do one thing, a lot of other pieces fall. You have to talk to other people and see how it will play out.”
Q: What are the top three improvements that you envision for the BCSD?
A: “Improved literacy scores, spending more time in math to see those gaps closed for our students, and improving instructional strategies in the classroom.”
Q: Are you a morning person or a night owl?
A: “I am definitely a morning person.”
Q: If you could bring back any fashion trend, what would it be?
A: “Rolled pants. It brought me back to times when I was a kid, and everything was a little more carefree.”
Q: Do you prefer iced or hot coffee?
A: “No coffee. I am a tea drinker.”
Q: What are your Summer plans?
A: “I would like to get to the beach. I will be going to Florida and will hang out with friends.”
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to let us interview you, Ms. Deliz. We appreciate your hard work and all that you do for Brooklyn. Enjoy your trip to Florida and the Summer ahead.
