Last week, we covered our preview for the girls basketball team. This week, it is time for the boys basketball preview.

A year ago, the boys finished with an impressive 15-8 record. However, they will be without some key seniors from last year’s squad: Jaiden Basinger, Randall Fields, and Jaiden Paschal.

Even with the loss of those seniors, Coach Jeff Shepherd has high expectations for this year’s squad.

“My expectations are to compete in all games and to improve day-to-day. We have two starters returning, seniors Jaiden Ramos and Santana Sammons. I expect daily commitment and hard work from all players. We want to win, and I feel that the players are on the same page. We want to continue to build on what we have done the past two years, going 12-12 and 15-8.”

Coach Shepherd knows that Ramos and Sammons will be key to a successful season, but he also highlighted some other players who will play an instrumental role in how far this team goes.

“Both Ramos and Sammons have worked extremely hard this Summer and last Spring. I expect both to be as good as any players in our league. We also have another senior who is going to help us and that is Anthony Pytel, who lettered and played a lot last year. Devin Hardwick, a sophomore, will be a very valuable player for us as well, and he has the potential to be as good as any sophomore in the conference. Juniors Tyler Cox and Aidan Starr will also be major contributors, and newcomers senior Rio Fields and freshman Muhammad Manigat will also be in the mix.”

Coach Shepherd believes that this year’s team can and will compete for the CVC Metro crown, and he is excited to see how far the Hurricanes go in the postseason.

In less than a month, the boys will tip off their season at home on December 1 against Garrett Morgan.

Good luck, fellas. Have a great season.

Go Canes!
