Chosen for this week’s Staff Spotlight is Mrs. Denise Sinko. This is currently year 30 for her in the Brooklyn City School District. Previously, she worked at Saint Leo’s in Parma for eight years. Some hobbies that she enjoys doing in her free time are hiking with family and friends, biking, kayaking, golfing, playing frisbee golf, and reading David Baldacci books. Mrs. Sinko is also a big fan of the following reality TV shows: Survivor, The Amazing Race, and The Challenge. A fun fact about her is that she is going to be a grandma in June!
Q: On a daily basis, what excites you about your job?
A: “Hands down, I get the biggest thrill at seeing my students succeed. When I see them working so hard on a skill and then see them perform the skill correctly, the look and excitement in their eyes is awesome!”
Q: If you could change anything about the Brooklyn City School District, what would it be?
A: “I would love to see all of our students PK-12 have daily physical education. Being active is important for lifelong health.”
Q: If you could give any advice to a senior in the class of 2024, what would it be?
A: “My advice to the senior class would be to go out there. Roll up your sleeves, and go after your dreams; don’t expect anyone to hand anything to you. You will appreciate and be proud of your successes if you have to work for them.”
Q: Describe the relationships that you have built with your students.
A: “Relationships are key to my success and my students’ successes. As a PE teacher, I have my students for six years, so building relationships makes my students feel welcomed, accepted, and respected. In turn, they perform and behave very well for me.”
Q: How do you plan on spending your Halloween?
A: “At school, in the days leading up to Halloween, I plan on setting up Celebrating Fall stations for my K-3 students. At home, our community does trick-or-treat on the last Sunday of October, so I will definitely be passing out candy. On Halloween itself, you can find me watching Big Brother on TV.”
Q: If you could have lunch with one person dead or alive, who would it be?
A: “I would love, love, love to have dinner with my mom. She passed away 15 years ago. I know in my heart that she has kept up with all that has been happening in my life. It would be nice to sit down and share it with her in person, though.”
Q: What is your biggest pet peeve?
A: “No secret here! My biggest pet peeve is students talking when the teacher or another student is talking.”
Q: What is your favorite sport to watch, and who is your favorite team to root for?
A: “My favorite sports to watch are football, Cavs basketball, and golf. I love cheering for the Buckeyes, Browns, Cavs, and Jordan Speith.”
Mrs. Sinko, you rock! You are so inspirational and motivating. We wish you the best this year and a Happy Halloween.
