Last Friday, the varsity football team had their homecoming game against their Chagrin Valley Conference rival, the Independence Blue Devils. The Canes came in with a record of 2-4, coming off a win against Beachwood, while Independence was winless at 0-6, with a recent defeat against Cuyahoga Heights. It seems like the Hurricanes had an advantage to make it two straight, but the Blue Devils had other plans.
In the first quarter, both defenses dictated the tempo by not allowing the opposing offenses to march down the field for early points. After one, the score was tied at zero.
However, Independence had the ball early in the second quarter and were able to put themselves in front with a touchdown with 9:29 to go. The Canes answered right back by bringing the ball into the redzone; however, they were unable to convert on fourth down and turned the ball back over to Independence.
The Blue Devils continued their offensive rhythm and marched the ball back down the field and scored another touchdown late in the second quarter. However, the extra point was no good and that brought the halftime score with Independence leading, 13-0.
13-0 at half is not an insurmountable deficit, so the Hurricanes still had plenty of time to get back on track.
Early in the third quarter, the Blue Devils scored their third touchdown of the game, and once again, they missed the extra point. Independence was now starting to pull away, up 19-0.
It did not stop here. The Hurricanes just could not sustain any offensive rhythm, and the visitors took advantage of this. The Blue Devils added on to their shutout late in the quarter with another touchdown, and again, another missed extra point. After three, Independence had a commanding 25-0 lead.
In the final quarter, Independence would make up for their missed extra points with a field goal, making the score 28-0.
Later near the end, the Blue Devils faked a punt on fourth down that led to a 34-yard touchdown to finish off the shutout victory.
Final Score: Independence 35, Brooklyn 0
With the loss, the Canes now stand at 2-5, while Independence earned their first victory of the season.
Tomorrow evening, the football team will travel crosstown to face the 2-5 Trinity Trojans with kickoff at 7:00.
